Names

Assalamualaikum,

“Sticks and stones may break my bones but names can never hurt me” — oh what a naive and stupid thing to say. Names can totally and definitly do hurt. I don’t mean name-calling (ie. fat face, pimple factory etc.) but I’m referring to actual ugly names that people have been so very unlucky to be stuck with.

Today, at work, I was going through the patient lists while processing the prescriptions and what not and I came across the name Olga. It made me cringe. Especially since this patient had an equally ugly last name which i won’t mention here due to confidentiality agreements. I don’t understand why some parents are willing to torture their innocent children and condemning them to years of teasing and bullying by giving them ridiculously ugly sounding names that just don’t roll off your tongue with ease. Imagine calling someone named Olga with love. “Oh OLGA honey, can you pick up the dry cleaning after work?” Good God. It just sucks out the sweetness. Some other fugly names I’ve come across: Agatha, Ursula, Constance, Mildred, … the list goes on. Who names their children those names? Why, for the love of God?

Thankfully, there are some pretty nice names out there as well. Names like Mark, Josh, Aliya, Soha, Saif, Lina, Laila, Salika, Shania, Shaila, Lauren & Soha is my favouritest girl name. Having a beautiful meaning to your name makes the word of a difference too, so if you’re thinking of changing your name officially, make sure you research it well.

My name, Farzana, is supposed to be of Persian origin meaning “wise”. Ironic isn’t it? =) Even with the cool meaning and what not, as a kid I got teased a bit because if my name. How, you ask? Well, I got called Tarzana — Tarzan’s wife ( we even had a picture book called Tarzana) & Fartzana. Luckily, that phase died out and one day in grade 5, when I was walking down the hallway with a friend (Zahra) we saw the Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear poerm outside a grade 1/2 class. “Fuzzy…sounds like Farzana”. That glorioius day in grade 5, I got the name Fuzzy and since then, it stuck.

Finally, just a note to you people naming children you know in the near future — think carefully. It could make or break the child’s confidence. It’s also good to note that Islamically, one of the responsiblities of parents towards their children is that they give them a name with a beautiful meaning.

Summer Arrives

Assalamualaikum,

Now, I don’t know a lot about weather trends and whatnot and don’t really follow the weather network but, if I didn’t know any better, I’d say summer is here. What say you? Ugly, Hot, Humid days have arrived. I’m not a huge fan of summer. Can you tell?

The worst days are a lot like how today was. Hot, sticky, humid summer days when you don’t feel like doing anything but sippig on that Iced Cap from Timmy’s and being the lazy child that you are. Yes, my friends, today felt like one of those days. Humidity kills it. Although I was only outside for 10 min. or so, I could barely breathe in that nasty polluted and thick air. It was terrible. Thank Goodness for air conditioning and showers and ice cream (mango, to be exact).

Having said all this, I have to profess that I like summer. I enjoy not having to worry about school. I enjoy the outings, the picnics, the random visits to the parks. I enjoy camping trips, the lakes, the camp fires, the breeze at night. I enjoy having water fights and card games and ludo face-offs. I even enjoy riding my old shabby, ghetto, magenta coloured bike. Oh my pretty bike, how I missed thee (that reminds me, I should probably get it “prepped” for summer). I longed to have summer for so long, and now that it’s here, I’m complaining? What an ungrateful brat I am.

I’m thankful, I’m thankful. Summer, I don’t hate you, I promise. Infact, I really do love you. I just dislike somethings about you, but then again, nobody is perfect. =) No hard feelings.

PowerWorkshop

Assalamualaikum y’all,

Plethora of notes from today’s workshop and session given by Muhammad Alshareef. Try and benefit from this if you can.

Time
- how we use our time defines how valuable our time really is
- problems in relatioships often occur because of lack of time spent with one another
- never live your life doing something which you may regret later

A Brain with a Breeze
- you want a “breezy” state of mind — ie. wan to clear your mind of junk and useless things and “to-do” items that you really don’t need
- need to sort our tasks into compartments and prioritize

Plan:

plan

“Haqqin Haqqa”
- give everyone who has rights, their rights
- many aspects of our life that we need to balance and live with. Our job is to be able to optimize and be able to accomplish as much as we can in each “departement” of our life.

We did an activity where we filled in the pieces of a pie depending on how much we feel we have accomplished from each aspect of our life. ie. If we are in excellent shape, and according to our standards,we think we deserve a 9/10, then we shade in 90% of the “Health” piece of pie. In the end, you wanna be able to shade in the entire pie for all aspects of your life. The pie looked something like this:

pie

It was important to keep in mind that the shading and our perception of having accomplished something was subjective. It would totally vary from person to person.

Spectacular Seven

- seven steps needed to have a goal and follow through with accomplishing it

1. Ultimate Vision
- what you want to do; where you want to be
2. Ultimate Purpose
- why you want to do what you want to do
- crucial in getting the vision and motivation to do something
- MUST have a clear and concise purpose for your goal
3. Roles
- establish a clear role for yourself and know what you’re expected to do
- “studmuffin”, power ranger, hahaha
4. 3 to Thrive
- three things you can focus on to get your plan rolling
5. Resources
- things you need/can use to accomplish your goals (friends, books, net, etc)
6. 1 year/90 Day Results
- must be specific, and measurable
- can set the bar high
- set the 1 year goal first, then work backwards to set the 90 day goal
7. RPM Action Plan
- results, plan, Map
- the action

Fine Art of Frog Swallowing
- eat big frogs first ie. get to your most important tasks first and tackle them
-every morning and night, think about: “what are two baby steps that I can take tomorrow that will bring me closer to my ultimate destination?”
- for the first two hours of your day, don’t check e-mail, so you’re forced to do work and be productive

Destination, Purpose & Map

- the compartment system
- like a “to-do” list but better
- be able to CHUNK and CATEGORIZE your list of to-do’s — seems less overwhelming and more tackle-able
- identify the MAP (massive action plan), result and the purpose
- Try to link the prupose to ultimately please Allah (God)
- Living spontaneously is a fancy way of saying you lead a lazy lifestyle

Iqaamatus Salaah

- establishing salaat (prayer) everyday actually gives you more time

Dead Deer

- don’t want to plan something for years and realize that’s not what you want
- if something isn’t working for you (ie. a plan, a goal, a solid purpose), then move on

Success Cycle:

Potential–> Action–> Results –> Belief/Attitude –> (back to potential)
- main component is ‘belief’ since even with failed results, belief boosts up potential

The Real You
Three circles of Influence
1. you can control
2. you can influence
3. you can’t cntrol or influence
1+2 are all that you should be concerned about.

- emulate people who are where you want to be
- list strategies used by people who are successful (your definition of success)
- read stories of the sahabas, understand the Divine Guidance of Allah (ie. the Quran)
- don’t spend life in vanity and useless things
- ultimate goal: Janna
