Nobel Peace Prize

Assalamualaikum everyone,

I just got an email from Mansur (Onjon Bhaiya) regarding a Bengali man who won the Nobel Peace Prize recently. His name is Muhammad Yunus and seems he’s done wonders for the poor and less fortunate in our little land of Bangladesh.

Nafs

Assalamualaikum y’all

Here are some notes i jotted down at last night’s Abdullah Hakim Quick’s lecture. Hope we all benefit from it. =) (just a note: I tuned in and out of the lecture so there may not be a flow in the overall content of the lecture.. too bad)

Abdullah Hakim Quick

- Allah provides from us in ways which we know not
- Allah is protecting the honour and dignitiy of Prophet (saw), not us
- greatest knowledge to have = knowledge of self
- Timbuktu!

Four Qualities of the Nafs (inner-self)
1. predatory nature
- materialistic
- courageous but too much anger and improper adhab
2. livestock
- followers
- carried along blindly and fall into desires
3. Shayateen (devil-like)
- combo of anger and desire
4. Lordly
- highest nature
- love of info and desire to control and be exalted (negative aspect)

Story about man in battle and right before he was about to kill his opponent, he was spat on. The man then walked away. When asked why, he said that if he were to kill the opponent now then it would be out of his own hatred and not for a pure reason. (example of battling predatory side for Lordly side)

Ways our heart is veiled:
1. disobedience and sin
- need purification of soul via tawba and repentance
- don’t delay repentance or accomodate for sins
2. Corrupt passions
- another side of us needed to be controlled
- vulgarity, crude, distasteful
3. ignorance
- understanding culture, rituals but not the roots of Islam
4. Blindly following (of people)
- following without thinking
5. satanic whispers (wus-waas?)
- we can’t stop it completely but can fight it as much as possible

Next Step (To Do)
- ask — seek knowledge
- we need to challenge ourselves spiritually (never be just ’satistfied’ in this regard)
- seek assistance from Allah
- one of the dangers of Muslims is getting satisfied and contentment and not striving to do better
- problems of heart are cured by opposites ie. fight pride by doing humbling things, greed by being generous

On a side note, my room is finally cleaned. Yay!

AWW

Assalamualaikum,

No, No, I didn’t see a fat little baby or a fluffy little kitten/puppy. AWW actually stands for Auto Wudu Washer. Some next company originally from Australia, called AACE, has come out with a machine more or less that does your wudu for you. You can read about it in detail here.

The whole idea I suppose is cute and all in an effort to make it ‘easier’ for Muslims to make ablution and hit the salah mats and all but seriously people… is it really that inconvenient to make wudu? Espeically considering that these machines will definitely not be in place in public places (schools, work etc.) where the challenge of making wudu is actually relevant. I’m not quite sure where the inventors wanted to put these into play but if it’s at masjids, homes etc, then it’s a hefty price to pay for a little conveniece. Boo-urns!

And just think, with the machine, we won’t be able to splash water and play around with the water as we please. Damn these business savvy people and their schemes of trying to make money. But hey, I don’t know what their true intent was. They may just as easily have been genuinely concerned for the Moslem Community at large. In that case, my apologies.

I still think it’s a silly looking machine.
